—A Word
I tried to put my hand to ink drawing first time in my life in 1960 and had a chance to show the work. Things shown here now are, however, quite different from those drawings. A series of burnt drawing among others is from the work whimsically and abruptly started in 1962 and never shown. A second series of lead pencil drawing of circles on black paper, done by means of motor, was began in 1963 for fun and sometimes as a gift to friends. Another series of ‘decalcomania without object’ has been my continued work since the exhibition in 1962: the technique itself was first experimented by Oscar Domingues Spanish surrealist painter in 1935, and I tried myself this ‘do-it-yourself’ device in the thirties. I should like to pretend to be an only and possibly last man still attached to the so-called ‘used’ way of surrealism.
Unfortunately, as a man of LETTERS, I’ve never got skilled in drawing and painting in my life. So everything exhibited here happens to be nothing but the work done simply by utilizing physical phenomena in my arbitrary way. Whatever illusion or vision one may get from it, it will be mostly due to the physical or chemical nature, and I remain a interferer. Pray don’t refer to the renowned ‘fantastic’ art or something like that. Well, but I wonder where is myself. [sic]
